Bassman Reissue Power transformer change

Hi All, First post here, hopefully you experts out there can help me.
I brought a Fender Bassman Reissue home from Dubai and it has the 220V power transformer. I ordered a 120V power transformer to replace it so I can use it here in the US but the replacement has fewer wires than the one in the amp!

I figured this would be a pretty straightforward job but Im pretty confused.
The original transformer has the following wires:
blk-grn
blk-red
white
black
blk-yel

yellow
yellow
red
red
green
green
red-yel
red-blu

The replacement has the following:

black
white

yellow
yellow
red
red
green
green
red-yel
red-blu

As you can see, the replacement is missing the blk-grn, blk-red, and blk-yel wires. Is it ok to just plug in the rest and not worry about these?

Also, the wires that are the same color (i.e. the two red wires, two black wires, two yellow wires) I can assume that they can be plugged in to either slot wihout a problem. Is this right?

Thanks in advance!
Max

Forum: Technical Discussion

Pre Amp tubes

I have a marshall TSL-100c, and I dont like how much pre amp gain is being produced, the sound it very abrupt almost and its not what im looking for.
So im asking you guys if I could just take one pre-amp tube out? and play it that way, or does it screw up the amplifier.
and if so, is there another way to lower how much pre amp gain there is, thankyou.

Forum: Technical Discussion

5e3 volume pot wiring

i bought a prebuilt kit from someone and want to "upgrade" it from the metal film resistors and cheaper signal/coupling caps and put in the proper grounding scheme (he grounded EVERYTHING to a single ground bar and to a Xformer bolt!) in the S2 volume pot wiring, the pots are mixed with 2 220K resistors. what is the advantage of this? more headroom? just a smoother increase in volume? i'm one that likes the interaction between the channels and volume pots/tone control in the 5e3. a little extra control over the volume without an attenuator would be great. thanks.
steve

Forum: Technical Discussion

Humming/buzzing on my tube amp.

Hey guys I hope you can help me.

I built this marshall 20watt amp, great amp.

The other day the amp started humming more like buzzing, very loudly.

It happens as soon as I switch the amp on and the tubes warm up. I know that the buzz is comeing from the input side of the amp because when I remove the two ecc83's then the buzz dissapears. All resistors work and caps my tubes are also fine so are the transformers. All connections are also solid.

Can anyone help me please?

Forum: Technical Discussion

Strange harmonic noise .... ?

Hey guys, first post on the forum!

I have a Fender blues junior NOS 15W 1x12. I bought it (partially) used... owned it for about two years... Have treated it very nicely, but with one mishap: after I purchased it, I took it to a show and it apparently got banged up because it started to sound funny. Got it fixed and ever since then, no issues...

There is a strange harmonic noise produced when I'm playing guitar. When I pluck a note, I hear the note along with a chorusy, detuned octave note above the one I'm playing. It's as if I'm literally playing through a strange detune/chorus pedal. And it's more apparent on the higher notes. If I kill the tone nob on the guitar, naturally I dont' hear it because its a high frequency noise.

I've done some superficial troubleshooting myself, like see if the reverb is doing it, turn off the FAT switch, turn it on and off... I can't pin point it.. so it's gotta be an internal thing (which I have no expertise with.)

Is this a common tube amp issue? Anyone know how to fix this? An expensive repair?

THANKS

Forum: Technical Discussion

Vox AC4 Loud HUMMMM

I recently acquired a 1962 Vox AC4 in sad but original shape. When turned on it produces an extremely loud hum from the speaker, almost like a shorted cord. When a guitar is plugged it passes the signal but is un-useable because of the hum. I've replaced the preamp and power tube with new ones and have a new rectifier on hand but haven't tried it yet. Anybody have any suggestions on possible causes ? Filter cap, bad ground ?

Thanks

Forum: Technical Discussion

VJ help with resistors r10 & r14

VJ fried r10 and r14. I just bought the VJ and it has a Hammond 125ESE transformer in it. The guy used it the day he sent it and told me he fried it. I had another board and threw it in and now it works but makes a bad humm which gets louder as the volume is turned up! The board he had in it has a fried r10 and r14 resistors. Does anyone know why these cooked? All else looks good and I bought two 1K 5 watt cement resistors and two 270r 3watt resistors hoping they could be used for r10 and r14. Does anyone know if they will work and which ones go where? I also have the s2 kit and BITMO tone kit with it. Will the BITMO and S2 work with each other? Any advice I can use! HELP!

Forum: Technical Discussion

12AX7 12BH7 based preamp

Hello all this is my first post!

I am about to build a preamp that I want to use to take a 1/4" keyboard line level signal and drive a Leslie 147 amplifier with it. I want to build the preamp using a 12AX7 and 12BH7 based on the design of a Hammond Organ preamp. Here is the schematic to the Hammond Preamp I am going to build:

http://www.captain-foldback.com/Hammond_sub/schematics/ao28.jpg

I want to build from C6 to the output transformer. I don't need anything other than that. Would it be better for me to use this circuit or design a circuit from scratch? If I did decide to use this circuit, would it be ok if I used a 250-0-250V power transformer or would I have to use a 340-0-340V transformer that is in the schematic. Also, would it be better to not use an output transformer like in the schematic? Here is a schematic of the Leslie 147 power amp that I am driving:

http://www.captain-foldback.com/Leslie_sub/Leslie_schematics/147.GIF

Please keep in mind that the Leslie was designed to go with this preamp schematic. I am open to any and all suggestions. I am mainly interested in whether or not I can build the 12AX7/12BH7 part of the Hammond preamp using a 250-0-250V transformer to save on cost, size and weight.

Thanks for all replies!
Forum: Technical Discussion

Epiphone Valve Standard problem (new to tube amps)

Hi everyone,

I just bought an Epiphone Valve Standard last week brand new, it was the last one in the shop. I love everything about the amp except for a few inconsistencies. This is my first tube amp so i didn't know what to expect. I've looked on some forums about this amp and a few other people have had the same problem with hum.

It's really weird because when i start using the amp there isn't much feedback, then after 30 mins or so(when the tubes are hot) it makes this real annoying hum. When i put the gain on 0 the hum is still there and it increases with MV knob.

Also sometimes when i switch to standby it makes a pop noise that doesn't good for the speakers(or wherever it's coming from).

It may be the tubes, but during random times i can hear a burning sound inside the amp. I'm just curious as to whether all these things are common in tube amps and what can i do to fix it. Or should i ring up the guitar shop from where i bought it and ask for a refund.

Thanks alot,
Ben.

Forum: Technical Discussion

Single Channel amp - channel switcher?

Hi, recently got a 15 Watt Orange Tube amp. I want to use it for both rythum and lead Playing, but I don't want to be twisting knobs in the middle of a song. And I dont want to use a distortion box because the amp already has great distortion.
